Miami Hurricanes
August 29, 2006
As we patiently await where a Hurricane named after one of my uncles is going, the summer of 92 once again pops into mind.
The wake up call named Andrew visited South Florida and left quite a mess. We left the sunny Miami Beach for beautiful Broward in fear of what a storm surge would do to the million dollar sandbar.
Turned out we were quite fortunate. All those homes that got built quickly and poorly in the early 80s out in Homestead were not as fortunate.
The funniest thing about returning to the beach was finding a tree that was once in the front yard had cleared our two story home and wound up in the backyard.
Power was out a day or two. Hot water & water pressure was absent much longer. My sophmore year at the home of the Hi-Tides was delayed by a week or two.
Then in 2004, we got the triple strike here in Central Florida. Three hurricanes in one summer. Not a good image for a town that relies on tourists. “The ultimate thrill ride in Orlando! Better than Disney, Universal and Shamuland! A real life Hurricane!” Mayor red face would love that ad campaign huh?
It could be worse. I could live in the birthplace of Satchmo.
Well, Ernesto when you are done with Fidel tonight let us know if you are coming our way, ok?
